Beautiful light graffiti art

Traditionally it has sometimes been unfairly viewed as vandalism and destruction of property - when in fact it should have been seen as beautiful. But taste is personal.

Graffiti is a style of art which relates to cities and city life. It is usually created by artists who live in or have a passion for the city life. The term urban means "from the city"-and sometimes urban art is called "street art". The style of this art is mostly cartoon based, and sometimes realistic. Sometimes it's made under city commission and sometimes it is done illegally. When it is done with a good heart and good intentions, we call it art - not vandalism.

Perhaps inspired by the graffiti which is famous on the 'other side' of Israel, by the country's neighbors, or perhaps inspired by the ugly Antisemitism which is witnessed around the globe more now than perhaps ever in history, sometimes in the form of ignorant anti-Zionism sentiment - urban and graffiti art is celebrated today in Israel.

Graffiti, or in the singular graffito is actually an ancient phenomenon. Examples date back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In today's society, graffiti saw a resurgence with the invention of spray-paint and more influentially hip-hop culture which grew out of the American inner-city.

There has long been a debate over whether urban art is vandalism or a wonderful form of expression. Such controversy makes it eerily appropriate in a Jewish forum - compare this controversy to that of the modern day Zionist state and you will find a symbolic parallel. Sadly, we also recall what was sprayed on the homes, synagogues, grave sites and shops of Jews in German and other Eastern-European cities in the days before the Holocaust. It still happens. Art which we do not approve of. None the less, as Zionists, graffiti seems a fitting expression for the way we feel
